Did you know that if you buy a used car with money owing to a financier from a previous owner, it could be repossessed? It’s true, if you don’t check for financial encumbrances (REVs check) you could end up losing the car you have just purchased. That would be very bad proposition for anyone who has saved hard earned money to buy their dream car. Before purchasing a used vehicle you should always do a REVs Check to see if there is any money owing on the vehicle you are buying.
Getting a REVs check in Sydney done is not at all difficult these days. All you need to do is collect your vehicle's relevant identifying numbers and documents and then call one of the government operated registers of encumbered motor vehicles. They will perform a REVs Check in Sydney and will be able to tell you over the phone if the car you're looking to buy has money owing on it, is stolen, or has been de-registered due to unpaid traffic fines.
Apart from this there is also an online option for car buyers which is the easier and the more preferred option these days. The government operated registers have set up websites which require only the VIN number i.e. the Vehicle Identification Number to perform a REVs check on your car and provide you with the REVS certificate which is the proof of a genuine and successful REVs Check.
The rules are a bit different when you are buying the car from an authorized dealer. However, if you are buying privately, it is your responsibility to find out if there is any money owing on the vehicle. Doing a REVs check and buying a car history report will tell you if a car has been reported stolen, written off by an insurance company, if there is money owing on it or if the registration of the vehicle has been canceled due to unpaid fines.

REVs Check- An Essential Step Prior to Purchase Used Car
The Register of Encumbered Vehicles (REVS) gathers recorded encumbrances for motor vehicles, motorcycles & vessels. A REVS Check can tell you if the used car or a boat that you are planning to purchase has any money owing on it from a previous owner. A REVs certificate is proof that there is no debt registered on the car at the time of purchasing it.
If you happen to buy a second-hand car with a debt on it, the car may be repossessed and the money spent on it won’t be refunded. One in five used cars bought privately has money owing on it. So it pays to do a REVs check before you buy. This is important information and it increases the need of getting a REVS check done before buying any vehicle. The REVS database will have information on the following type of vehicles:
• Cars
• Motorbikes
• Caravans
• Trailers
• Boats with hull identification numbers (HINs)
• Jet skis
• Outboard motors with engine numbers.
REVS does not cover:
• Boats without HINs
• Outboard motors without engine numbers
• Farming machinery
• Mining machinery
A REVS check doesn´t tell you whether a car is stolen or written off. So, one must not have this criterion in mind while going for a REVs Check. V Check or vehicle information check gives you the entire history of the vehicle. V Check offers those planning to buy a vehicle, especially a second hand vehicle, a quick and easy way to obtain important information about the vehicle before its purchase.
The vehicle information check or V Check can be purchased for a car, truck, caravan, trailer, bus or motorcycle which has been manufactured on or after 1 January 1989. The vehicle information check empowers consumers to make informed decisions when purchasing a used vehicle and helps in reducing fraud and vehicle theft.
